Dog & Cat Capillaria Test
What is Capillaria?
Capillaria is a small in-size parasite. Unlike intestinal worms, Capillaria can live in various locations within the animal, affecting both dogs and cats.
What species does our new kit cover?
Eucoleus aerophilus (also known as Capillaria aerophilus)
Facts:
- Lives in the respiratory tract
- Adults attach within the lungs and along the trachea
- Affects both cats and dogs
Eucoleus boehmi (also known as Capillaria boehmi)
Facts:
- Can be found in the membranous tissue of the nasal passages and sinuses
Other species (not covered in our test) P. plica – Lives in the bladder. Eggs are then shed in urine when toileting.
How can my animal be infected with Capillaria (E. aerophilus and E. boehmi)
Simply put, your pet can be infected with Capillaria via the environment.
Capillaria E. aerophilus and E. boehmi lay eggs within the airways of your pet and then these are coughed up and swallowed. The eggs then pass through into the faeces.
Eggs can then be ingested when your pet goes for a walk, over the contaminated environment. This may be through simply licking their paws.
What are the signs of Capillaria?
- E. aerophilus – Coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath
- E. boehmi – nasal discharge and sneezing
It is also important to remember that there may be no clinical signs of infection
How is Capillaria diagnosed?
Capillaria (E. aerophilus and E. boehmi) can be identified through faecal testing. It is worth noting that Capillaria sheds intermittently therefore we require three consecutive days’ worth of samples. Our new AI machines then screen for these species and offer a reliable source of detection. Please note, Capillaria is screened for as part of the intestinal worm and lungworm combined subscription kit and ONLY when you have an active subscription. This is a subscriber benefit.
How is Capillaria treated?
Capillaria is easily treated and advise on this can be provided by our SQPs if required.
